Five Tips for Having a Healthy Fall

How to Have a Healthy Fall

The fall is here! The days are starting to get shorter, the weather is starting to get cooler, and you might already be thinking of hibernating until spring. However, you don’t need to hide away! This is a great time to focus on your health. The time for summer vacations is over, the kids are back at school, and the holiday season hasn’t arrived yet, so you’re likely won’t be filled with as many social obligations and tasks as you were before (or will be soon!)

Now you can really focus on yourself. Here are five tips for having a very healthy fall season.

Eat Fresh Foods

The fall season brings a wide variety of healthy and delicious produce, including:

  • Apples
  • Cranberries
  • Pears
  • Pomegranates
  • Pumpkins
  • Sweet Potatoes

And more! Just because the summer is over, it doesn’t mean you’ll need to stop eating fresh produce. Many of these fall foods are filled with nutrients, vitamins, and antioxidants. Plus, they taste great!

Exercise

The fall can actually be the perfect time to exercise outside, especially earlier in the season. The hot and humid days of summer are behind us, but it’s still comfortable enough to spend a lot of time outside. Dress in layers as fall weather can be unpredictable, head to a scenic area filled with fall colors, and get active outside!

Get Some Sunlight

During the fall, the days are shorter and the nights are longer. This might make it a bit more difficult than usual get some sunlight. However, there are many health benefits to spending some time in the sun. Your body produces vitamin D when exposed to sunlight, and this vitamin is important for bone health as it helps you absorb calcium.  Plus, for many people, spending time in natural light can help improve your mood and fight off depression.

Open your curtains or blinds in the morning and go for a walk during lunch so that you can get some sun this fall.

Boost your Immune System

Cold and flu season is on its way, so this is a great time to boost your immune system to reduce your chances of getting sick. Eat a healthy diet, get plenty of sleep, and try to reduce your stress levels. Limit the amount of alcohol you consume and quit smoking if you can. All of these activities will make it less likely that you get sick this season.

Stay Hydrated

Just because you’re not hot and sweaty, it doesn’t mean you don’t need to drink water. Staying hydrated is important in all seasons, so be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
