Five Great Winter Exercise Tips
Staying in Shape This Winter
While you might be more tempted to stay inside, watch movies, and wait for the dark and dreary winter to end, that likely isn’t the best choice for your health. Staying active and gettingregular exercise has many benefits. First of all, you’ll be better able to control your weight if you’re keeping active. You’ll also reduce your risk of cardiovascular diseases, strengthen your muscles, lower your risk of Type 2 Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome, and much more.
Exercising regularly also improves your mental health and mood. It’s common to feel down, sad, or “blah†during the winter months, but regular exercise can help with these issues.
Think that it’s too difficult to stay in shape during the cold winter months? That’s not true! Here are five winter exercise tips to keep you going.
Work Out in your Own Home
You don’t need to struggle with winter weather and head to the gym just to work out. There are many different exercises that you can do at home, including push-ups, tricep dips, jumping jacks, sit-ups and much more. Be creative and come up with some routines that you enjoy!
Wear Appropriate Clothing when Outside
If you do go outside, remember to dress appropriately. Winter weather can be unpredictable, so you’ll want to dress in layers. This will give you the ability to add or remove layers as necessary to keep yourself comfortable.
It’s also important to wear proper footwear. There are additional hazards present during the winter months (ice, snow, road salt, etc.) that you will want to protect yourself against. Be sure to wear shoes or boots that have appropriate treads and ones that offer good support for your feet and ankles.
Exercise with a Friend
One of the best ways to keep yourself motivated and inspired is to work out with a friend. Plus, it’s just more fun. Almost everyone feels a little down at this point in the winter, so why not add some happiness and cheer by turning your exercise routines into social gatherings?
Play a Sport
If you’re getting together with friends to exercise, why not play a sport together? This can be much more fun than heading to the gym and just as good for your health. Pick a sport you enjoy and get out there!
Stay Hydrated
You may not feel as thirsty during the winter months as you do when exercising during the summer, but your body needs hydration just as much. Make sure to drink plenty of water before, during, and after you exercise.
