The Importance of Eating Breakfast

You’ve probably heard all about how important breakfast is, but is it really true? The truth is: YES! Breakfast is very important for many reasons. Breakfast provides your body with the energy and nutrients it needs to start the day. Studies also show that eating breakfast helps people maintain a healthy body weight. This is because those who skip breakfast are more likely to feel hungry or lack energy before lunch time and are, therefore, more likely to turn to high-sugar or high-fat foods for a boost.

Studies also show that those who eat breakfast tend to eat fewer calories throughout the day, which helps control weight.

Eating breakfast also translates to improved concentration and performance at work as well as greater strength and endurance during physical activity.

Having breakfast has also been associated with a lower incidence of heart disease while skipping breakfast has been associated with high blood sugar levels.

However, it’s not just eating breakfast that is important, it’s eating the right breakfast. But what is the “right” breakfast?

Choosing the Right Breakfast

The best breakfasts are ones that nutritious and filling enough to give you energy to last until lunch. A good breakfast contains healthy carbohydrates along with fiber and protein. Sorry, it’s not a doughnut and a coffee.

If you’re looking to prepare a healthy breakfast for yourself, choose at least two or three items and make sure to include several food groups. Try to have something from the fruit and vegetable group, a milk or dairy product (or alternative) and a whole grain item (such a bread or cereal). It’s also a good idea to add some lean protein to your breakfast, such as egg whites or yogurt.

One of the main reasons why many people do not eat breakfast (or why they only eat a doughnut, for example) is because they do not have the time. However, with a little planning, you can make and eat a healthy breakfast each morning. Buy portable breakfast items such as fruit, low-fat yogurt, etc. These items can make it easier and quicker to prepare and eat a healthy breakfast in the morning.

Also, planning your breakfast the night before can go a long way to helping you actually eat one. Prepare or put out whatever items you can to cut down on time and effort in the morning.
