Switching Up Your Workout

Avoid Boredom by Changing Things Up

If you work out regularly, it’s only natural that you’ll start to feel bored by your routine after a while. This can lead to decreased enthusiasm and make it more likely that you skip a day or two – and then eventually more. Doing the same thing over and over will naturally lead to boredom and that can have a negative affect on your workouts.

When you do a workout that you enjoy, you’ll be much more likely to keep it up. Here are some tips for how to switch up your workout and keep doing something that you’re interested in.

You can start by changing up a few of the individual exercises that you do. Keep the general routine the same, and switch up your exercises to ones that work the same muscle groups in a different way. For example, change standing barbell curls to seated dumbbell curls. These changes will allow you to keep working on the same muscles, but the different exercises will be enough of a change that you won’t get bored.

Of course, you can also change your workout by incorporating something completely new. Even adding in one new exercise could help you overcome boredom and get back on track.

However, if you’re bored enough with your workout that you’re dreading doing it or if you’re skipping more workouts than you’re actually completing, it might be time for more drastic changes. Before you do this, think about what you enjoyed about your workout when you first started it. This will give you guidance on what you can change to make the whole thing more enjoyable.

You could try taking your workout outside, if possible. Sometimes a change in location is all that’s needed to motivate you to keep going. Try to come up with ways that you can do a similar workout to the one you’re already doing.

Of course, you can always change your workout seasonally. This gives you a different workout every few months, so you’re a lot less likely to get bored. Plus, you can take advantage of outdoor exercise during the warmer months, and that’s always enjoyable.
