Healthy Ways to Celebrate Halloween

Halloween is just around the corner. While this means ghosts, ghouls, costumes and fun, it also means chocolate, candy, chips and a whole bunch of other junk food. Of course, eating a small amount of Halloween treats on this special occasion is typically fine. However, it’s very easy to overindulge at this time of year.

Here are a few tips for having a healthy and happy Halloween.

Eat First

Whether your kids are going out trick or treating or you’re attending a Halloween party, it’s a good idea to eat a healthy meal before you head out. This will keep you from overdoing it when you’re presented with a huge bowl of Halloween treats. It’s also a good idea to drink plenty of water. This will keep you hydrated and feeling full.

Give Your Kid a Smaller Bag

If  you have a child who is going out to collect treats, give him or her a smaller bag to gather them in. Most kids won’t want to stop picking up candy until their bag is full, so make it easier to do so. They’ll still have fun, but they won’t come home with such a huge mountain of treats.

Get Rid of Excess Candy

If you’re having a Halloween party or (especially) if you have a child who has gone trick or treating, your home is likely filled with way too much candy and chocolate on November 1st. For this reason, it’s a good idea to portion out a reasonable amount that you’re going to eat over the next little while and then get rid of the rest.

How can you get rid of it? There are several ways. You can split it up among friends who didn’t collect candy this year, you can donate to several charities that accept Halloween candy and, depending on where you live, you might be able to turn it in to your dentist.

Serve Healthy Options

There’s nothing wrong with putting out a bowl of candy at your Halloween party, but it’s also a good idea to serve up some healthier options as well. This allows people to take a break from the non-stop candy.

Have Non-Edible Treats

There are plenty of fun treats that you can give out without adding to the huge pile of candy that children get each year. Consider glow sticks, stickers, small toys, fun erasers, etc. this Halloween. You can get some great ideas from looking around at your local dollar store, for example.
