Exercise Tips for Seniors

Staying in shape as you get older is important. There are a number of benefits to getting regular exercise for seniors. It helps prevent bone loss, improves balance and coordination and reduces the risk of many diseases. Regular exercise also improves your mood and your state of mind.

However, there are some challenges associated with starting or maintaining a regular exercise routine as you age. If you have ongoing health problems, injuries or other concerns, you may be worried about starting an exercise routine. If you haven’t worked out in a while, you may feel nervous or be not quite sure where to start.

Here are some tips for seniors exercise routines.

Remember to Stretch

Stretching improves flexibility, makes movement easier and reduces the risk of injury. Before you exercise, take a few minutes to stretch slowly and carefully. Don’t bounce when you stretch.

Start with Walking

Walking is good exercise and most people can do it. Even if you can only walk a short distance, that’s a good start. Choose a place that has a smooth, soft surface. A lot of people choose to walk in shopping malls. This is a good idea because they’re climate controlled, there’s no vehicle traffic and there are numerous places to stop and take breaks as needed.

Gradually Increase Activity

If you want to do other sorts of exercises, start slowly and gradually increase your activity.

Wear the Right Outfit

Make sure that you’re wearing a comfortable pair of shoes that provide good foot support. Comfortable clothing that allows you to remove around easily is also very important.

Take Breaks when you Need Them

Remember to take breaks if you’re feeling tired. There’s nothing wrong with sitting down to rest. In fact, doing so can help encourage you to keep going when you’ve rested up. If you experience any negative symptoms or if you feel unwell, stop exercising immediately.

Work out with a Friend

It’s always more fun to exercise with a friend. Take a walk or participate in other exercises with a friend, neighbour or relative. This will give you a good chance to catch up while you get in shape plus it will keep you motivated.

Stay Hydrated

It’s important to drink plenty of water, even if when you’re not out in warm weather. Be sure to drink water before, during and after exercising.

Talk to your Doctor

Before you start doing any exercises, be sure to speak with your doctor. He or she will know what exercises are safe for you and which ones could lead to injury or medical issues.
